 At the beginning of his career, Murakami appeared to be content with the lot of most successful contemporary artists: to create work that is admired by critics and desired by wealthy collectors but leaves the general public baffled or hostile. He was constructing conceptual pieces similar to the art being made in the West. Among those early works, which began attracting attention in the early 90's, was "Polyrhythm", a seven-foot-high slab of yellow resin, minimalist in form, on which many toy United States infantry soldiers climb.

Κάποιες φορές πρέπει να βρίσκεσαι την κατάλληλη στιγμή στην κατάλληλη θέση και κάπως έτσι, μαζί με μπόλικη τύχη, να γραφτεί ένα μικρό ή μεγάλο κεφάλαιο στην ιστορία. Τι θα γινόταν το 1988, κάπου στο Χόλιγουντ, αν ο νεαρός surfer – φωτογράφος Ithaka Darin Pappas δεν ήταν πρόθυμος, να βοηθήσει έναν άγνωστο με τα ψώνια του; Αυτός ο άγνωστος δούλευε τότε στη δισκογραφική μίας νέας ανερχόμενης μπάντας με το όνομα N.W.A. Ίσως να μην είχαν τραβηχτεί ποτέ οι θρυλικές πρώτες φωτογραφίες των N.W.A., ένα hip hop συγκρότημα με μέλη τον αδικοχαμένο Eazy-E, τον Ice Cube και Dr. Dre, τους Arabian Prince, MC Ren και DJ Yella. Όλη η ιστορία του hip hop της Δυτικής Ακτής των ΗΠΑ, η γέννηση της gangsta rap, το άλμπουμ «Straight Outta Compton» και των παραγωγών του Dre, τα δεκάδες άλλα ονόματα που ξεπετάχτηκαν μετά από αυτούς, οι καυστικοί στίχοι που «προφήτευσαν» τις εξεγέρσεις στο Λος Άντζελες το 1992, όλα γύρναγαν γύρω από τους N.W.A.
