"Beyond South Central" Rap legends N.W.A as seen thru the lens of Ithaka Darin Pappas
Beyond South Central, by Ithaka Darin Pappas, is a collection of rarely seen black and white sometimes candid photographs of iconic gangsta rap superstars N.W.A. Between the years of 1988 and 1990, Ithaka Darin Pappas was a regular freelance photographer for Priority Records. During this time he worked with N.W.A. approximately eighteen to twenty times. Although Ithaka was responible for some of the record imagery (Straight Outta Compton maxi-single cover and the We Want Wazy maxi-single cover), the images he was most often involved with were capturing candid portraits during key moments of their career and on the sets of music video shoots and interviews. His pictures of N.W.A. have appeared in the books Contact High (Random House), Ice Cold (Taschen), and Hip Hop Raised Me (Thames & Hudson), etc. His works represent the most extensive collection of N.W.A. pictures created by a single photographer.

The end of the earth is upon us
Pretty soon it’ll all turn to dust
So Get Up !
Forget the past
Go outside and have a blastGo a thousand miles in a jet airplane
Go out of your mind go insane
To a place you never been before
Eat ice cream our you’ll lick the floor
Because, the end of the earth is upon us
Pretty soon it’ll all turn to dust
Goodbye my friends
Goodbye world
I’ll see you in the next life

(2020 Summer Drum-n-Bass Surf-Guitar Seabra-Is-Mad Mash Up) [Official Video]
lyrics, vocals & re-edit (song & video): Ithaka Darin Pappas @_ithaka_
music by: Joe Fossard, Ewan Butler /produced by: Joe Fossard, Ithaka vocal engineer: Sinewave /guitars: Ewan Butler/drums: Sergio Nascimento photograph: Ithaka at Madeira 1995 by: João Valente (Surf Portugal) ________________________________________________________________ Ever since the initial release of the USL version of "So Get Up" in 1994, the parties involved; Kaos Records, Tribal America and USL members (DJ Vibe and Rui da Silva), have presented "So Get Up" as an entirely 100% Portuguese track, apparently for marketing reasons...even though it was actually a preexisting song written and recorded almost a full year earlier by Ithaka Darin Pappas (a Greek-American from California, only temporarily residing in Lisbon) originally made for his own album project, So Get Up & The Lost Acapellas. Two acapella versions of "So Get Up" (a song that changed the entire electronic-music economy of Portugal during the 1990's) were released by USL in the United States by Tribal America, a subsidiary of E.M.I. without ANY authorization from the lyricist/vocalist. Ithaka, an award-winning hip hop vocalist and songwriter, was not paid royalties or even given a featuring credit on his own raw vocal. In 1995, the USL version charted at #83 on the UK pop charts. In 1997, Stretch N Vern's "Get Up! Go Insane!", using the same vocal recording, charted at #17 (UK). Meat Katie also had success in the late 1990's with "Next Life" using the same acapella. In 2013, Cosmic Gate reworked "So Get Up" into a trance version stadium banger, becoming one of the duo's most recognizable songs, (again, using the existing acapella with No vocal credit given)... even manufacturing T-Shirts utilizing Ithaka's lyrics, with no mention of the author. The release of the uncredited 1994 acapella versions had created a snowball effect of illegal "So Get Up" remix versions that continues until the present. Today (in 2020), with more than one-thousand released remixes, it is The Most Remixed Vocal Acapella In Musical History, yet vocally/lyrically, it largely remains anonymous. When credit has been given on the subsequent mixes of "So Get Up", which is rare, it is normally given to Underground Sound Of Lisbon whose version was the first to bring Ithaka's vocal-poem to public attention even if none of USL's music is actually present on the new mix or release. Ithaka's vocal poem "So Get Up" has been musically interpreted by producers of literally every sub-genre of electronic music; Progressive House, Deep House, Techno, Tech House, Trance, Dream Trance, Big Beat, Drum n Bass, Trip Hop, Downtempo, Hardcore, Gabber etc etc etc... and has appeared by the alternative titles of; "See You In The Next Life", "Forget The Past", "The End Of The Earth", "Hardventure", "Headcharge", "Belther", "Last Resurrection, "PPF (Past, Present, Future)", "Intensity", "Soultech!", "Phat Prick", "Trance Line", "Have A Blast!" etc, etc, etc. "So Get Up" and it's derivatives have sold (unofficially) 30,000,000+ copies since 1993. At the beginning of his career, Murakami appeared to be content with the lot of most successful contemporary artists: to create work that is admired by critics and desired by wealthy collectors but leaves the general public baffled or hostile. He was constructing conceptual pieces similar to the art being made in the West. Among those early works, which began attracting attention in the early 90's, was "Polyrhythm", a seven-foot-high slab of yellow resin, minimalist in form, on which many toy United States infantry soldiers climb.
